Gender and Invisibility in Italian Scientific Research: An Analysis of Institutional and Cultural Dynamics within the National Research Council (CNR)
Abstract
This working paper analyzes gender configurations within the National Research Council (CNR) considering the outcomes of the 2022 PRIN PNRR project “Le Invisibili – LeI. Women’s Intellectual Invisibility from the Renaissance to Present Day”. It does so by critically interrogating the institutional, cultural, and symbolic forms of gender inequality within Italy’s leading public research institution. Drawing on a quantitative survey conducted with CNR’s scientific and technical staff, the study aims to highlight the significant discrepancy between the public perception of gender inequality and the recognition of lived experiences of discrimination. The research findings reveal the persistence of structural and symbolic barriers-including vertical segregation, stereotypes, and microaggressionswhich reflect internalized and naturalized logics of gender hierarchy, even within the largest scientific community in Italian public research. Using the interpretive framework of “gendered organizations”, the study questions and problematizes the presumed neutrality of scientific institutions regarding gender. It proposes an intersectional reading of female vulnerability, considering variables such as age, scientific discipline, and career position. The implications drawn from this analysis point to the urgent need to advance transformative policiespolicies that can intervene in evaluative processes, institutional language, and cultural frameworks-to deeply deconstruct the mechanisms reproducing epistemic inequality.Downloads
