Narratives on Science, Research, and Society from Young Researchers in Italy
Abstract
This report presents the findings of a survey conducted as part of the BRIDGES project, a participatory and transdisciplinary research initiative funded by Fondazione Cariplo. The survey investigates the narratives and perceptions of young researchers in Italy regarding science, society, and collaborative practices in research. The national survey engaged over 2,000 participants, examining daily practices and attitudes toward responsible and socially engaged science. Within the framework of the BRIDGES project, the survey also facilitated the selection of a group of participants who were later involved in seminar activities, transdisciplinary experiments, and citizen science initiatives. The investigation delved into the epistemic, socio-political, and identity dimensions of research, exploring disciplinary boundaries and the integration of diverse knowledge systems. The survey results, which reveal strong representation from STEM disciplines and CNR-affiliated institutes, highlight significant regional disparities, with a concentration of researchers in northern urban centers. Additionally, there is growing interest in collaborative approaches, emphasizing the need to overcome disciplinary fragmentation to tackle contemporary socio-ecological challenges.Published
